Support the MN Starter Homes Act
Support the MN Starter Homes Act. Here’s why.
To solve Minnesota’s housing crisis, the government must remove self-imposed barriers. The Starter Homes Act, currently before the State Legislature, is the bipartisan tool we need to get more homes built.
While the MN League of Cities views this as a loss of local control, a more productive perspective is that it expands a city’s toolkit. This isn't a "one-size-fits-all" mandate; the bill offers a menu of options designed to empower builders and communities.
During a recent committee hearing, Representative Patty Acomb (District 45B, Minnetonka) criticized the bill for not creating "Affordable" housing. However, that misses the point. Explicitly Affordable housing requires massive subsidies to bridge the gap between 2026 construction costs and buyer income. The magic of the Starter Homes Act is that it requires zero taxpayer funding.
By legalizing the types of homes people actually need—starter homes, duplexes, and townhomes—we address affordability through supply. The logic is simple:
- Low Supply: Buyers compete for limited options, driving prices up.
- High Supply: Sellers and landlords must compete for residents, driving prices down.
We’ve seen this model succeed in other states. It’s time to replicate that success here in Minnesota. By supporting Representative Spencer Igo’s (District 7A, Hibbing) proposal, we aren't just building houses; we are creating the foundation for more stable, accessible communities.
