How to Host a House-Cooling Party

We’ve all been to house-warming parties, celebrating new beginnings and fresh starts in a new home. But have you ever heard of a house-cooling party? I hadn’t—until just last week, when some long-time clients invited me to theirs. And honestly, it’s a brilliant idea.
These clients (friends, really) are moving out-of-state, and not just across town or even across the country—they’re moving across an ocean! After 13 years in their home, they had accumulated a lifetime’s worth of treasures and belongings. Naturally, they needed to sort through everything before the big move. Instead of simply donating leftover items, they decided to host an open house for friends and family to come by and take whatever they needed or wanted. It was a thoughtful way to share their belongings and memories with loved ones before starting a new chapter abroad.
This house-cooling party (open house style :: 12-8p on a Saturday) was a win-win. They got to spend time with those they care about before their departure, and they cleared out most of the remaining items, as they prepared their home for its next owners. Plus, I walked away with two leeks, some olive oil, and an adorable lap blanket from a wedding at Franconia Sculpture Park, one of my favorite spots in the Twin Cities.
Whether you’re moving across the street or across the world, moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter and simplify. Hosting a house-cooling party could be a fun, meaningful way to say goodbye to your old home and share your belongings with people who will appreciate them. It’s a fresh take on the moving process that brings community and connection into what can sometimes feel like a stressful time.
So, if you’re planning a move soon, consider throwing a house-cooling party. It might just be the perfect way to close one chapter and open the next—with a little help from friends and family.
