Choice Is Not Standard in Real Estate. We Think It Should Be.

Too often, people are handed a single path in real estate, and told it's the only one that works. We’re here to say, “not true!”

Most people come into real estate believing they’ll have options. Options in how they’re represented. Options in what they pay. Options in how involved they want to be.

In reality, most buyers and sellers are guided into a single, standardized path—often without realizing there could be alternatives. The same commission structures. The same expectations. The same quiet assumption that “this is just how it works.”

But that raises an important question:
Who does that lack of choice actually serve?

How one-size-fits-all became the default

Over time, percentage-based compensation and bundled services became the norm in real estate. Not because they work best for everyone, but because they’re familiar, easy to replicate, and rarely questioned. Transparency around what services cost—or which ones a client actually needs—often gets lost in the process.

When systems prioritize uniformity over flexibility, clients are left adapting themselves to the model instead of the model adapting to them.

Why choice matters

Choice isn’t about making things more complicated. It’s about agency.

When people understand their options, they can make decisions that align with their goals, their comfort level, and their financial reality. Without that clarity, clients may pay for services they don’t need, move faster than they should, or feel pressured into decisions that don’t quite fit.

And the impact isn’t evenly distributed. First-time buyers, sellers navigating major life transitions, and historically marginalized communities are often the most affected by rigid systems and unclear incentives.

What we’re trying to do differently

At REC, we believe real estate should offer real choices.

That means:

  • Tailored services instead of one bundled package
  • Clear, upfront pricing rather than percentages that feel abstract
  • Options for different levels of support, including DIY pathways
  • A commitment to transparency and client-first representation

Not because choice is trendy—but because it’s more honest.

The bigger picture

When people are given clear options, they’re better equipped to advocate for themselves. When systems are transparent, trust grows. And when real estate becomes more flexible, it becomes more equitable.

We don’t think choice should be the exception in real estate.
We think it should be the starting point.
